We leave Marrakech after breakfast to travel across the majestic Atlas Mountains to Ouarzazate, the location of many prominent films like Alexander the Great, The Mummy, The Jewel of the Nile, Kingdom of Heaven, and many others. The view is amazing. We stop at Ait Benhaddou, one of Morocco's most spectacular forts, to have lunch. We then go to Ouarzazate, dubbed "Africa's Hollywood," for lunch. We continue on to the Valley of Roses, where we dine on the night of our stay. In May, the roses are harvested, resulting in an annual festival.
We begin our day with a drive to the Todra Canyons, where many rock climbers come to enjoy their favourite pastime. We'll continue our journey from Erfoud down the Middle Atlas, past a series of superbly constructed fortified villages. It is one of the most interesting routes in the Southern region. The village is made of red sand and was developed by the French as a administrative centre. Its fossil marble is extremely rich. Everything from ashtrays to washbasins is embellished with fossilised marble to bring out its form. The Merzouga dunes, where the Sahara begins, are a must-see. The dunes are a representation of the Sahara desert. We will get off our vehicle and take a camel to a Berber camp. Why not try sand dunes boarding whilst surfing the Sahara Desert! We sit around the campfire after dinner and listen to traditional Berber drums.
